Top 3 takeaways on the NHL playoffs from a new hockey fan
I have a confession to make…… I might have new obsession. If you are like me, once the NCAA tournament ends, you feel like you have an empty piece in your life. Usually the NBA playoffs is enough to fill the void in my heart until around mid-June, but for whatever reason this year it just hasn’t done it for me. So I decided to venture out and get out of my comfort zone with some hockey action and let me tell ya I’m so glad I did. Being from Kentucky it’s hard to find people around here who follow hockey or can even name a team for that matter. So I wanted to share with you the things I have found fascinating about the sport that I once couldn’t tell you a thing about.
Fights….O the fights
This is the most obvious one for me. I knew that hockey players threw down but my God these playoffs have been full of brawls. The Washington- Tampa series was one that stood out to be to just be a flat out blood bath. Also is it just me or is Alexander Ovechkin and really the whole Washington Capitals team for that matter the dirtiest motherfuckers in the whole league? Maybe its just the Russian grit in him but damn this man is constantly hitting someone with his stick (on the ice of course). I wonder if that is Putin influenced or not. If he could just let me borrow the Putin credit card for a day so I can pay my rent and maybe even buy a sixer of natty light, that would be great. Bleep this part out in case Putin is reading.
The whole 3 period’s thing
Now I’ll be honest, at first I thought this was dumb considering it is the only sports I can think of that has three periods and my brain process change but I got to admit it’s kinda dope. First off hockey is one of those sports you can’t take your eye off of for one second, or you might miss an exciting goad or a fist fight in middle ice (like I did last night going to take a shit). But three periods is basically like giving you an extra halftime, which gives you plenty of time to get more food, beer and think about getting your life together.
If you are like me, you’re a big parity guy. Its one of the biggest reason I love the NFL and starting to fade away from the NBA, I love when anyone can win. Just look at last year with the Nashville Predators. Squeaked into the playoffs as an 8 seed and made the Stanley cup and almost won the whole damn thing. You just never know what is gonna happen until that puck is dropped and if the bounces will go your way.
Even though my Lightning won’t be playing (and yes I totally hoped on the bandwagon) I’m so fucking stocked for the Stanley Cup. With the intensity at its highest and a great story in the Vegas Knights, I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.
