Next Week’s MLB Draft

As the MLB draft approaches, teams are still evaluating players as the regionals are going on. Most teams sort of have an idea of who they are drafting but need these few extra games just to make sure. We’re going to take a look at who has the top 5 picks and who I think each team will take.

  1. Detroit Tigers
  2. San Francisco Giants
  3. Philadelphia Phillies
  4. Chicago White Sox
  5. Cincinnati Reds

Detroit

The Tigers have the #1 pick and I’m 99.9% sure they are going to take Casey Mize from Auburn. He’s going to trade his now Auburn Tigers jersey, in for a Detroit Tigers jersey. Mize is 9-5 with a 3.07 ERA this season. With over 100 innings pitched and 140 strikeouts, he is the sure top pick. Mize has 3 complete games this season with one of them being a no-hitter. From watching him pitch in the SEC tournament last week, I heard the announcers say he will spend very little time in the minors, which is something you rarely see. Three of the top four prospects for the Tigers right now are pitchers, but when there’s an arm like Mize available, it’s hard to pass that up.

San Francisco

Buster Posey has been the face of the Giants for years. However, since he suffered his horrific injury, he has since transitioned to first base which will likely be the position he plays to end his career. I think the Giants are going to draft a catcher this year. Joey Bart is hands down the best catcher in college baseball. Bart has a huge frame at 6’3″, 225 pounds. He has tremendous power and has been the starting catcher for Georgia Tech since his freshman year.  It will be very hard to replace a talent like Posey, but Bart has amazing upside and should be a good MLB catcher.

Philadelphia

With an already stacked farm system, the Phillies get this years third pick and I wouldn’t be surprised if they draft a third baseman. Wichita State has the best third baseman in the country in Alec Bohm. His 6’5″, 225 pound frame gives him a huge presence at the hot corner. Bohm will likely need a few years of minor league experience before he is ready. Mainly in part for Santana’s contract to finish up in Philly so Bohm can step in and be the guy. There were 3 different picks I had going at #3 and it will be fun to see who Philly takes. When you have a guy like Bohm on the board, you have to take him.

Chicago

When the White Sox traded Chris Sale to Boston, they got amazing prospects like Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech. The White Sox have great young talent and I think they are in some what of a rebuild. Chicago needs to take a second baseman and Nick Madrigal out of Oregon State is their guy. He has been dubbed “Dustin Pedroia 2.0″, and has top tier defense. Madrigal was the Pac-10 player of the year and defensive player of the year as a sophomore. He has the type of skill to play very little minor league ball before stepping into the bigs. The only thing holding him back is his size. He is listed at 5’8″ but some scouts have pegged him at 5’7”. Now we know baseball is a sport where size doesn’t matter. We’ve seen some of the best players in the game be very small guys. It will be interesting to see where Madrigal lands and how much he plays in the system before heading to the show.

Cincinnati

Alas we reach the ole Redlegs. They took Hunter Green with their first pick in last years draft who was arguably the top overall pick but wasn’t selected at #1. The Reds have tons of defensive guys headlining their top prospect list. The one thing I think they need more of is pitching. Brady Singer, the SEC pitcher of the year and who I think is the best pitcher in baseball, should be their selection. Singer is a straight up DAWG. This dude is a flat out stud and more importantly, he’s a winner and will give 110% every time you send him out there. Singer is 10-1 this season with a 2.25 ERA. Bothered by a recent hamstring injury, he hasn’t pitched much in the last month but the skill is there. I think Cincinnati would be stupid to let this guy slip by if he’s still there. Then again, it is the Reds.
