Big Blue Nation lost a beloved and impactful figure with the passing of C.M Newton. Not only was he a two sport athlete at Kentucky but also brought them back from the dead with the hiring of Rick Pitino. He played for Adolph Rupp on the 1951 National Championship team and even pitched for the bat cats before eventually signing with the New York Yankees farm team. You don’t see this that much anymore.
Newton, who is also in the Naismith Basketball hall of fame, had a big impact on integration in the game of basketball and in the SEC. He recruited the first African America player at both Transylvania and Alabama where he coached.
It’s fair to say C.M made a huge impact in the way the SEC is run and changed UK athletics forever. He will be missed.
