Over the next few days, we’ll be looking at some of our favorite MLB All-Star Game and Home Run Derby Memories. For today’s memory, let’s checkout Cal Ripken Jr in his 19th All-Star Game in 2001. It was Ripken’s last appearance.
Before the first pitch was even thrown, Alex Rodriguez came over and told Ripken that they were switching positions, since everyone wanted Ripken to play Shortstop again. Ripken was reluctant to make the switch at first, but after Joe Torre waived him over he really didn’t have a choice.
Ripken went out with a bang in his final All-Star Game appearance. To leadoff the bottom of the third inning, he hit a solo shot to left field off of Chan Ho Park.
The Iron Man was honored as the MVP of the game. The AL defeated the NL 4-1.
